Rules at a Glance
Structure of a game
A game of Valhalla plays out over turns (called eras), each split into three phases:
- Harvest — each jarl collects the resources produced by their village: food, wood and gold.
- Action — recruit units, build structures, attack enemies or offer sacrifices to the gods.
- Event — draw an event card that may bring blessings, disasters, or advance the Ragnarök marker.
Resources
| Resource | Primary use |
|---|---|
| Food | Keep troops in the field |
| Wood | Build structures and longships |
| Gold | Market, hire elite units |
| Glory | Victory points — earned through battles and sacrifices |
Combat
When you attack an opponent, both players reveal the units involved. Attack and defence values are compared, modified by any active divine blessings. The loser takes damage and withdraws units; the winner gains glory and may plunder resources.
Sacrifices to the gods
By offering resources to the three gods you unlock special powers:
- Odin — vision and strategy: look at an opponent’s hand or draw extra cards.
- Freya — prosperity: double one turn’s harvest or heal wounded units.
- Loki — chaos: sabotage an enemy building or secretly swap cards.
How to win
The game ends when Ragnarök is fulfilled (the marker reaches the end) or when a player accumulates 50 glory points. The player with the most glory at that moment wins.
This is just the foundation. The strategies go much deeper — we’ll unpack them turn by turn.
